What Is an IP Rating?
IP (Ingress Protection) ratings are standardized codes that tell you exactly how well a device resists dust and water. The format is always IP followed by two digits: IPXY. X = dust protection (0-6), Y = water protection (0-8).
First Digit: Dust Protection
| Rating | Protection Level |
|---|---|
| IP0X | No dust protection |
| IP5X | Dust-protected (limited ingress) |
| IP6X | Completely dust-tight |
Second Digit: Water Protection
| Rating | Protection Level | Real-World Example |
|---|---|---|
| IPX4 | Splash-resistant from any direction | Light rain, kitchen splashes |
| IPX5 | Water jet from 6.3mm nozzle | Heavy rain, outdoor washdown |
| IPX7 | Submersion up to 1m for 30 min | Accidental drop in water |
| IPX8 | Continuous submersion beyond 1m | Marine, underwater use |
Which Rating Do You Need?
IP54 — Indoor / Light Outdoor
Sufficient for retail, hospitality, warehouses, and offices. Handles accidental splashes and dust. Most entry-level business radios are IP54.
IP65/IP66 — Outdoor / Industrial
Required for construction sites, farms, and outdoor events. Handles rain, dust storms, and high-pressure water jets.
IP67 — Marine / Harsh Environment
Needed for maritime, fishing, and heavy industrial use. Survives full submersion. The gold standard for rugged two-way radios.
IP Rating Is Not Everything
A high IP rating does not mean the radio is indestructible. Drop resistance (MIL-STD-810G), operating temperature range, and battery performance in cold weather are equally important. Always match the radio specifications to your actual work environment.
