What to Consider Before Buying
Choosing the right two-way radio for your business comes down to five factors: coverage area, network type, durability, battery life, and total cost of ownership. Get these wrong and your team loses communication exactly when it matters most.
1. Coverage Area: On-Site vs Wide-Area
If your team operates within a single facility or campus (up to 3-5 km), traditional UHF or VHF analog radios work well. For citywide, nationwide, or international coverage, you need PoC (Push-to-Talk over Cellular) radios that run on 4G LTE networks with SIM cards.
2. Network Type: Analog, DMR, or PoC
Analog radios are the most affordable option for simple on-site communication. No license needed for PMR446/FRS models.
DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) offers clearer audio, longer battery life, and better spectrum efficiency than analog. Ideal for manufacturing, construction, and security teams.
PoC (Push-to-Talk over Cellular) uses 4G LTE networks for unlimited range. Perfect for logistics, transportation, and multi-site operations.
3. Durability: IP Ratings Matter
IP ratings tell you how well a radio resists dust and water. IP54 handles splashes; IP67 survives submersion in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. Construction and outdoor teams need at least IP54.
4. Battery Life
A standard 1500-2200mAh battery provides 8-12 hours of typical use (5% transmit, 5% receive, 90% standby). For extended shifts, look for 2500mAh+ batteries or buy spare batteries.
5. Total Cost of Ownership
Beyond the upfront price, consider: license fees (analog/DMR may need frequency licenses), network subscriptions (PoC requires SIM data), accessories, and battery replacement cycles. Factory-direct wholesale pricing significantly reduces per-unit cost for bulk orders.
Quick Decision Guide
- Single site, budget-conscious: License-free PMR446/FRS analog
- Manufacturing/security: DMR digital with IP54+
- Multi-site or nationwide: 4G LTE PoC radio
- Harsh environment: IP67 waterproof with ATEX certification
